Poker tips: Value-betting on the river

Knowing how to handle the river separates the good players from the amateurs. The river is where the professional poker players will distance themselves from the amateur opponents.

Amateurs do not get much chips to get some value on the river, and this mistake has two bad effects on their game. One, they cannot win big pots although they have good hands. Most of the time, the river is when the more chips are pushed to the center, and when amateurs check when they should bet. It is when they win medium sized pots when they can win bigger ones. Two, amateurs will not be bale to bluff effectively when they do not know how to make value-bets to balance their poker strategy. You can determine what cards one holds by knowing how to fish for the info.

Out o f position bets

A lot of players become timid during the river and usually just checks hoping that hope that they will just be checked too. This should not be your game plan just like in boxing, you do not want to be passive during the closing rounds of the bout.

If you are too passive on the river, your opponents will pick you apart. Continue punching on the river and win those pots. Of course there will be times that you will be knocked down but there will be times that you can hit big.

Blocking bets

When out of position, you can make blocking bets to remain active. These are small bets about 25 to 50% of the pot. There are two benefits with this move: you can set up the price for a showdown and be paid by the bad cards. Remember though that there can also be a downside to blocking bets especially when you giveaway too much information to your opponent about your hand.
